H
owerton & Bryan's roots run deep in Durham and the surrounding area. In fact, we opened our doors just five years after Durham received its charter in 1869. While longevity alone is a quality for which we take great pride, we are even prouder - and humbled by the trust that Durham's families have placed in our family and the Howerton & Bryan name for over 125 years.
The Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home was established in 1874 by Mr. R.T. Howerton, Sr. It was then known as the R.T. Howerton and Sons Funeral Home.
Howerton's son, R.T., Jr. became partners with Kenneth Bryan in 1931, at which time the firm took the name Howerton & Bryan. Mr. Winston E. Montgomery joined the firm that same year, and over time, assumed complete ownership of Howerton-Bryan. Mr. Montgomery remained active in the business until his death in 1997 at age 88.
Today, Howerton & Bryan is still operated by Mr. Montgomery's family - son-in-law John W. Wood and his wife Anne Montgomery Wood.
The Montgomery-Wood family has strong ties to the Durham community, having been active in the business, civic and religous affairs of Durham for over 100 years.
Our highly qualified personnel have been our hallmark and we are uniquely positioned to serve the growing Triangle community.
